Edge solitons of topological insulators and fractionalized quasiparticles in two dimensions.

چکیده
An important characteristic of topological band insulators is the necessary presence of in-gap edge states on the sample boundary. We utilize this fact to show that when the boundary is reconnected with a twist, there are always zero-energy defect states. This provides a natural connection among novel defects in the two-dimensional p{x}+ip{y} superconductor, the Kitaev model, the fractional quantum Hall effect, and the one-dimensional domain wall of polyacetylene.

Fragile Mott insulators.
We prove that there exists a class of crystalline insulators, which we call "fragile Mott insulators," which are not adiabatically connected to any sort of band insulator provided time-reversal and certain point-group symmetries are respected, but which are otherwise unspectacular in that they exhibit no topological order nor any form of fractionalized quasiparticles. Different fragile Mott ins...
متن کاملBright solitons from defocusing nonlinearities.
We report that defocusing cubic media with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearity, whose strength increases rapidly enough toward the periphery, can support stable bright localized modes. Such nonlinearity landscapes give rise to a variety of stable solitons in all three dimensions, including one-dimensional fundamental and multihump states, two-dimensional vortex solitons with arbitrarily high t...
متن کاملTopological Insulators with Inversion Symmetry
Topological insulators are materials with a bulk excitation gap generated by the spin-orbit interaction that are different from conventional insulators. This distinction is characterized by Z2 topological invariants, which characterize the ground state. In two dimensions, there is a single Z2 invariant that distinguishes the ordinary insulator from the quantum spin-Hall phase. In three dimensio...
متن کاملMonte Carlo study of phase transitions out of symmetry-enriched topological phases of bosons in two dimensions
We study a statistical mechanics model of two species of bosons with mutual statistics θ = 2π/n in (2+1) dimensions. This model realizes a fractionalized topological phase of bosons, which is a fractionalized version of the boson integer quantum Hall effect. The model can be studied with sign-free Monte Carlo simulations. We study the phase transitions between the fractionalized topological pha...
متن کاملModulated Floquet topological insulators.
The application of spatially uniform light on conventional insulators can induce Floquet spectra with characteristics akin to those of topological insulators. We demonstrate that spatial modulation of light allows for remarkable control of the properties in these systems. We provide configurations to generate one-dimensional bulk modes, photoinduced currents, as well as fractionalized excitatio...
